I have been testing sorghum syrup as nutrient on my plates since I'm always experimenting (and contrasting with my usual nutrient, LME).
Primary reason for this was that I had a few cultures that didn’t seem to really like LME as nutrient so i was eager to revitalize them by changing their nutrient source. So that’s how I got started with sorghum.
So far the results have far exceeded any and all of my expectations, I wasn’t expecting this kind of such vigorous growth with it, but I'm very happily surprised. Even cultures that loved LME, seems to love sorghum even more. And some that hated LME, finally showed vigorous growth once transferred to sorghum.
I must say this, i will 100% continue using sorghum either as my main agar (still don't have a set recipe as its too new for me but will keep tweaking with ratios to see whats optimal) or at the very least, have sorghum along with LME plates for my cultures.
Having said that, i will continue experimenting with other nutrients to see how those fare as well (pda and others).
But I'm highly optimistic right now with sorghum and i have the added synergy benefit since I use millet as my grains, and sorghum has an extremely similar nutrient profile as millet, so it makes forma very smooth transition for the mycelium from agar to grain.
I think this is not a topic many speak about and wanted to put it out there for awareness and so others also go and experiment with diff nutrients and see how they fare via their usual nutrients.
In the pics below, some of my sorghum plates for reference.
